The International Prodromal Research Network Physchosis Satellite meeting with ICOSR

The International Prodromal Research Network
Psychosis Satellite Meeting

An Official Satellite of the
INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON SCHIZOPHRENIA RESEARCH

The Manchester Grand Hyatt
San Diego, California

Thursday March 26th and Friday March 27th 2009

IPRN Mission Statement

The IPRN is an organization involving representatives of research programs from around the world that address issues related to the early detection of individuals at risk for psychosis and other forms of major mental illness, the prediction of conversion to psychosis, identification of mechanisms underlying conversion, and the development and validation of early intervention and prevention strategies. The primary goals of the organization are to stimulate collaborative activities among such research programs and to develop and refine methods and procedures related to the prevention of psychosis. The IPRN is sponsored in part by the Staglin Music Festival for Mental Health.

2009 Satellite Meeting Goals and Format

IPRN meetings are highly interactive, and a premium is placed on generating lively debate of the most critical and contentious theoretical, methodological, and conceptual issues in prodromal research. This year we will explore the theme “Adolescent Brain Development, Neuroplasticity, and the Onset of Psychosis” via three oral sessions and one poster session on Friday, March 27, as a satellite of the International Congress on Schizophrenia Research (ICOSR). In addition, the IPRN and ICOSR will co-sponsor a symposium to be held during the ICOSR program on the topic “Is Prevention of Psychosis a Mission Impossible?”

The morning session on Friday, March 27 will examine models of the neural mechanisms underlying the onset of psychosis. The Keynote Address will be given by Dr. Alcino Silva of the UCLA Department of Neurobiology, who will be speaking on “Animal Models of Adolescent Brain Development and Neuroplasticity.” Subsequent talks and discussion will address translational issues related to neuroplasticity in the development of psychosis and its prevention.

The first afternoon session will be devoted to efforts to develop prediction algorithms for psychosis in the three largest prodromal studies to date. Discussion will focus on the degree to which the findings of these studies replicate each other and the potential for an omnibus or meta-analytic study integrating the data from these projects.

The second afternoon session will address the elucidation of predictive biomarkers for psychosis, focusing in particular on assessment approaches sensitive to variations in neuronal connectivity. Discussion will focus on the degree to which presently available methodologies and procedures tap into the theoretical mechanisms underlying psychosis onset.
